Promotional items with functionality

You don't always have to have people interested in your brand when sending them a promotional item, especially if the item is something they will use. About a year ago I signed up to a website for a well known alcoholic drink company in order to enter a competition. This drink wasn't something I would ever buy myself, but the prize on offer was of interest to me at the time. When signing up I ticked the box letting them send me information in the future, hoping to hear more about future competitions. However, rather than that I have received a variety of promotional items that have increased my interest in the company and its produce. At first I was sent a leather holder for my credit cards when I go on a night out, branded with the companies logo. Now whenever I go out I take this rather than my wallet, and inevitably when I get my money out one of my friends notices it, and decides he wants us to have a round of that particular drink. While I myself would never choose to buy the product myself, the fact that the promotional item I was sent came in useful meant I used it regularly, and as a result of that I became a promoter of the drink. My friends all signed up for the website after seeing what I had received - even though there was no guarantee they would be sent anything similar. Now I drink this particular drink quite regularly, and still receive promotional gifts from them every few months which I often pass on people to promote them - simply because I was so impressed by their use of promotional items.
